Core

Item 22.   Time: 90 minutes of core reading instruction at ALL grade levels

Recommendations

Best practice indicates providing a minimum of 90 minutes of uninterrupted core reading instruction per day (based on a 5-day instructional week). Uninterrupted time ensures that assemblies, early release days, field trips, or other activities are not scheduled during the reading time. It also means that students are not pulled from the 90 minute reading time for other services such as English Language Development, speech services, specially designed instruction, etc. This 90 minutes allows for sufficient coverage of the multiple reading skills students need to be successful readers (e.g., Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, & Reading Comprehension). It also allows for a mix of whole group, small group, and independent activities.
